The first painting my mom asked of me for our house in Beirut. It is a reproduction of "Spirits by the Lake" by Leonid Afremov. It was after this painting that my mother believed that I could paint and allowed me to set up (some) of my tools at home (with the condition of not causing any mess or stains).

6 months, this little piece took me 6 months to complete. Not because of details or technical difficulties. No, it was just too heavy to carry on.
A lot happened in the past year. I wasn't myself, too scared, too insecure, too excitable. But hey, we could literally die any second so let go, have fun, put yourself out there, live on the edge, try new things. Do everything you can to NUMB the pain.
A lot of things died inside of us after the explosion, but the most wounded was HOPE. The hope that took shape on the 17th of October, the hope to build a nation that resembles us. And losing it broke my heart, because my love for Beirut remained intact, if anything I love it more and more each passing day. I love every scar Beirut carries, every imperfection every vulnerability. However I felt so weak, that all I could do was lead the past 6 months in a frantic celebratory mode to enjoy whatever is left before it's all gone.
Gone where? What I didn't realize is that WE are Beirut. It's up to us, if we give it up we give up on the essence of who we really are. Who's going to define this city? Who will be roaming its streets, occupying its houses, working to build its society?
It is not until January that i was able to just. sit. still. sit with the pain, with all the feelings. By welcoming the pain, you allow its transformation. Our hearts work in magical ways, we cannot love what's textbook perfect, flaws are what keeps our hearts beating and Beirut's flaws are many, that my heart cannot stand being apart from it anymore. All I can say is that I'm staying. And I wish I never left.
